He defended the free world, he owned pet pigs, he could pull off a romper, and he won a Nobel Prize… what’s not to love about Winston Churchill?

The more I learn about Sir Winston Churchill, the more fascinated I become. Sure, my Dad seems to have quoted Churchill on a daily basis for the entirety of my life, but not until relatively recently did I fully appreciate how legendary Churchill is. Those of us who know even a little bit about him are aware of his remarkable impact on the World Wars. And those of you who may be unfamiliar with him, you have Churchill to thank for the democracy we cherish so dearly today.

Sir Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. After years of being a rebellious youth and lazy student, Churchill joined the military and led a career in politics and writing. I’m no history major, so I’ll spare you the entire timeline of Churchill’s life and achievements, but I do think it’s worth taking this time to appreciate the man for who he was: unapologetic and right in being so.

Churchill is perhaps best known for his influence as he was prime minister during World War II, and it’s no wonder why; he relentlessly resisted Hitler’s power all while rallying his fellow citizens to “never give in” through his famous speeches and his visionary tactics.

While I’m obviously grateful for the effective leader Churchill was in the 1900s, I think there’s something to be said for the impact this hero can have on the 21st century as well. As Churchill once said, “words are the only things that last forever.”

Churchill changed the whole world in his days, so I believe there’s nothing stopping him from motivating you to push through this semester, to apply for that dream internship, or to simply make it through the end of today. So without further adieu, here’s a list of a dozen Winston Churchill quotes to inspire your success:

  1. “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

  2. “Never, never, never give up.”

  3. “The price of greatness is responsibility.”

  4. “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”

  5. “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”

  6. “When you are in doubt what to do, do nothing… when you are in doubt what to say, say what you really think”

  7. “Our fight is hard. It will also be long… but win or lose, we must do our duty.”

  8. “To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day.”

  9. “…it is better to be both right and consistent. But if you have to choose—you must choose to be right.”

  10. “What is adequacy? Adequacy is no standard at all.”

  11. “It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time.”

  12. “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

If Winston Churchill could grow from a hopeless student into the man who gave “blood, toil, tears, and sweat” to triumph over the Nazis in the second World War, then you can do anything.
