In 2018, I started a gratitude journal after watching one of my friends do it for a few months. In 365 days, it changed my perspective on life upside down and gave me a whole new outlook.

Being grateful is an act that I don’t see very often in our society, but I have compiled a few ways to change that and hopefully change your perspective as well.

Start a gratitude journal

Starting a gratitude journal is super simple. First, go to your closest store, or Amazon, and find a journal that you like.

Each morning, you will write 2 things that you are grateful for. For example, my first day I wrote I was grateful for my family and having a roof over my head. At night, you will write one thing you are grateful for that happened that day.

As the days and weeks progress, you will have the ability to look and see all of the many people, places, things, and ideas that your are grateful for. This journal can truly change your outlook on your life and how blessed you are.

Do community service

In high school, I did hundreds of hours of community service. Now that I’m in college, it’s harder to make time for it, but I make sure I can find a way to do it. Whether it’s at Feeding South Florida for me, or your local food bank, taking time to help others who need it, is something that can help you become more grateful in 2019. Starting a pledge is an easy way to commit yourself to changing your outlook. So, I pledge that each month I will do 4 hours of service at my food bank, and 40 hours serving time at Rock The Ocean in April. Join me in pledging your time.

Do a kind act

I try to make it my mission to do at least ONE kind act every day. This obviously shouldn’t be hard, but when I’m having a bad day, it does lift my spirits. Help someone struggling to put their groceries in their cart, buy a meal for that homeless person you see everyday on your daily commute, or open the door for someone. A small act of kindness goes a long way, especially when you act like you want the world to be.

I hope to see more gratefulness in 2019.
