American politics have reached a point where nearly every issue is made into a partisan talking point and politicized. The hyper politicization of some matters has led to a divisive monopolization seen especially by the Left. For liberals, it is no longer enough to care and advocate for various human rights issues. You must now subscribe to their policy views in order to convince others you care. Issues like mental health, sexual assault, and the environment should not issues that can be claimed by a single party. These issues need to be taken seriously and tackled by all humans.

Politicizing issues is a gross tactic used by the Left in an effort to look morally superior. Let’s remember on the 2016 debate stage when after pledging to invest in mental health should he become president, Senator Bernie Sanders said, “and when you watch these Republican debates, you know why we need to invest in mental health.”  The comment drew little criticism from the left as liberals are seen as champions and advocates for mental health. The protection from criticism on comments regarding mental health shows just one example of the dangers of holding a monopoly on a human issue. No one should be safe from taking heat when making such an insensitive comment. No one individual or one party should act as though they hold precedence over issues that affect all humans, regardless of their political affiliation.

1 in 5 Americans suffer from mental illness in any given year. That’s 18.5% of the population. 1 out of 6 American women have been the victim of either attempted or completed rape. All these statistics should motivate us to come together as a nation to find real solutions to real problems every day Americans are facing. We should not create a political monopoly over humanitarian issues. Acting as though the Left, or any political party for that matter, are allowed to be the only ones to care about humanitarian issues is an absurd notion. In fact, it takes away the legitimacy and attention of those the issues affect. Show you truly care about victims of sexual assault by focusing more on protecting them. Don’t use them as your latest political prop. It is a gross political tactic that is far overdue to end.

Another issue the Left loves to act as though they have precedence over is caring about the environment. Liberals portray the issue of environment as if you must buy into their big government policies in order to convince others that you care about protecting the environment. Fighting over which party cares more about the environment takes away the legitimacy of the issue. In fact, it can even turn away potential activists. The environment is a topic that concerns all of us. We should all care about it, despite our differing methods of attempting to help the environment. Let us take the opportunity to all come together over our common concern, rather than politicize something we all have a stake in.

In our highly politicized culture, it is no wonder members of the left are politicizing humanitarian, human rights, and environmental issues we are all affected by. This divisive tactic takes away the seriousness of the matter at hand. These issues are grossly used for political gain. Caring about victims and the environment means actively fighting for the two. It does not mean trying to convince others your side cares about it more or in a better way.
