Life is tough sometimes and it is important remember that it is a bad day, not a bad life!

I know, I know. Finals are going on, you have three papers to write, try-outs in a few days, and a hundred definitions to remember by next week. Life can be stressful; it can throw curve-balls and next thing you know, you feel like you’re ten feet under. When you feel like you’ve got the weight of the world on your shoulders, it is important to stay calm and remind yourself that you can handle it. Being successful and working hard isn’t easy – if it was, it wouldn’t be worth it. When you’re feeling stressed and you can’t find the positives in life, just remember to take a step back and breathe. This is the first step to collecting your thoughts and getting yourself back on track.

Each night, I make a to-do list as a way to be more productive and to stay positive regarding the tasks I have to complete. Before winding down for the evening, I make sure to write in my planner all of the tasks I have to get done the next day so that when I wake up in the morning, I have an organized list of everything that must be completed. Compiling a list makes it much easier to get a head start and begin accomplishing things early rather than scrambling and trying to figure out what needs to be done. This allows me to view tasks more objectively and reminds me that I can easily get everything done, so there is nothing to stress over.

Okay, so you’ve made a to-do list and set up your schedule for the day, but you still feel overwhelmed and it seems as if nothing is going your way…now what?! Just relax, and try to breathe. If something doesn’t seem to be going your way, ask yourself if this is an issue that you can fix yourself, or if it is out of your hands. If your answer is the latter, it is the responsibility of someone else, and there is no reason to stress about it because it is out of your control. Stressing and freaking out over a problem that’s out of your hands is not going to help the situation. If it is a situation that you have control of and can fix, do everything in your power to correct the problem, and work diligently to ensure that the same problem will not arise again in the future.

Everyone has bad days, or even bad weeks. This does not make you a bad person, it just makes you human. We all make mistakes and have off moments. It is important not to allow that negativity to consume you or prohibit you from working hard and achieving your dreams. Setbacks and struggles only make you a stronger, more empowered individual. When all is said and done, and you’ve kicked butt at whatever it is that you are doing, it will be much more satisfying knowing that you didn’t let the negativity and hate get you down and stop you from achieving your goals. So, I encourage you to work hard to get that A, try out for that sports team, or even have the courage to ask for help. In the end, just remember, that what you are experiencing is just a bad day, not a bad life.
