The FFL Reading Challenge encourages our readers to expand their literary horizons. We encourage readers to step outside their comfort zone to read new and interesting books. One way we’re doing that in 2019 is by encouraging you to read a graphic novel. There’s a ton of great graphic novels out there for all ages, so you won’t have to look far. If you’re a bit apprehensive about graphic novels and want to start with something familiar, check out these graphic novel adaptations of well-known books.

Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the most talked about dystopian novels ever and recently adapted to a TV show by Hulu. Women are basically incubators and have no rights in this scary future, but the graphic novel should draw you in.

A Wrinkle in TimeThis 1960s science-fiction children’s book about love and bravery was recently adapted into a movie starring Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, and Reese Witherspoon, but you can dive into this graphic novel first.

The Diary of Anne FrankThe horrific story of the Holocaust was introduced to countless classrooms through the diary of a young girl, Anne Frank, and in this graphic novel, she and her family come to life once more.

Kite RunnerThis story of friendship and loss set in Afghanistan is one of the most read best-sellers and often taught in schools. This graphic novel is much shorter but captures the story beautifully.

The GiverThis dystopian novel has also been adapted to film, so it makes since to turn it into a graphic novel too! It’s an oldie-but-goodie dystopia perfect for fans of Hunger Games and great characters. 

Anne of Green GablesTake a trip to the farm with this beautifully-illustrated adaptation of the story of Anne of Green Gables, from orphan to teacher and every mishap in between. 

Game of ThronesNow that the show is coming to an end, go back in time and see where it all began. This graphic novel adaptation is a bit easier to follow that the thick book, and there are multiple volumes to read!

To Kill a MockingbirdThis classic novel about race, justice, and family is now a graphic novel! It’s a great way to introduce the beloved classic to a new generation and keep it relevant.

SpeakBefore there was #MeToo there was Speak, a moving novel about a girl who loses her voice in the wake of a violent rape and must find her voice once more in order to get justice for the boy who hurt her so badly. The graphic novel is beautifully adapted.

The HobbitIf fantasy novels aren’t really your thing, or you’ve just put off Lord of the Rings for this long, why not start with this graphic adaptation of The Hobbit that will transport you straight to Middle Earth?
