While the world is still recovering from 2016, many candidates are revving up their engines for the few fall 2017 races left to run. 2017 has already seen a couple special elections to fill seats left open by Trump administration appointees, but there are still some elections left to be sorted out. Here are the biggest elections happening nationwide in the fall of 2017, ranging from gubernatorial to mayoral races and everything in between.

New Jersey gubernatorial race

Embattled and much lampooned Governor Chris Christie, a 2016 presidential candidate, has reached the end of his gubernatorial career. New Jersey is looking for his replacement. Due to term limits ,Chris Christie is not eligible to run again.  Phil Murphy will be representing the Democrats in this race. Kim Guadagno will be representing the Republican Party. Murphy formerly serves as the US Ambassador to Germany under President Obama and had a long career at Goldman Sachs. Guadagno is currently the Secretary of State of New Jersey and its Lieutenant Governor. She also worked as a federal prosecutor. As of recently, it has been looking like the race favors Democrats, but it’s hard to be certain this far in advance. New Jersey will vote on November 7th

Virginia gubernatorial race

Democratic Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has been term-limited and will not be running for another term in office. Batting for the Democrats in the November election is Ralph Northam, the current Lieutenant Governor and a former state senator. Batting for the Republicans is Ed Gillespie, the former head of the Republican National Committee and an aide to President George W Bush. The VA gubernatorial race features a Libertarian candidate too, Cliff Hyra, a patent law attorney. The polling is close. It will certainly be exciting to watch going forward. Virginians will vote on the first Tuesday in November.

Alabama Senate race

Jeff Session’s appointment to be Attorney General of the United States left his Senate seat open. It is currently being filled by Luther Strange, who was appointed by the governor in the interim. The state of Alabama held a special election to permanently fill the seat on August 15th. It resulted in a run off scheduled for September 26th between Luther Strange, the Attorney General of Alabama, and Roy Moore, a former Alabama gubernatorial candidate. The general election is on December 12th.

Utah House race

When Jason Chaffetz left Congress to join Fox News  at the end of June many were left scratching their head, but there was a seat that needed to be filled in Utah’s third district. The general election will be one of many elections on November 7th, 2017. Because this is Utah we’re talking about, and Republicans have been a strong force in Utah for decades. The GOP nominee is local mayor John Curtis.

New York City Mayoral race

If you have noticed that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has been in the news a lot recently, it’s likely because he’s up for re-election this November. He will face off against Republican challenger Nicole Malliotakis. Malliotakis is a New York assemblywoman and the daughter of two immigrants, from Greece and Cuba. She has been nationally recognized for her work, including at CPAC. There are technically many, many more people “running” in the race, but it is going to shake down to de Blasio and Malliotakis after the primaries in September. Bill de Blasio’s approval ratings have been dropping in recent polls. While he is still favored to win, it could be his race to lose. We know better than to assume a winner at this point, don’t we?
