The new year is here and setting goals can be difficult. Some of us set our goals too high and others simply do not follow through on their resolutions. It is important to set achievable goals for yourself to ensure a happy and healthy year. Here are some resolutions that we can all achieve to better ourselves in the upcoming year.

1) Volunteer  

You truly don’t realize how much of a difference you can make by simply giving your time to a worthy cause. Even if you only volunteer once in 2017, you are still helping something or someone. Volunteering is easy as there are many local places that are always looking for extra hands. Whether it be at an animal shelter or feeding the homeless, volunteering will encourage you to count your blessings while helping others as well.

2) Be kind

We all tend to get tangled up in the moment with our feelings. It is important to think about what you say before you speak. While it’s easy to let your emotions take over, be more kind to people this year, even strangers. You never know what someone is going through. The world could always use some more compassion, so next time you find yourself in an angry situation, try kindness. Even holding the door for someone could go a long way.

3) Make time for yourself

This one can be difficult to follow through with, especially when we get busy. It is important to, not only take care of yourself, but also to pamper yourself every now and then to ensure a happy year. Whether it be treating yourself to some shopping or something as simple as a “cheat” meal, making yourself happy is just as important as making others happy.

4) Spend more time with those you love

While it is easy to get caught up in life and forget to call home often, use this year to make time to chat with your loved ones. Life is busy, but you will cherish those small moments with your loved ones forever. This is an easy goal to accomplish and making time for your family or friends, even if it is only for a phone call, will brighten your day and theirs. God blessed us with people to lean on and people who love us, calling home will allow us to step back and remember that. 

5) Pray more.

Like all the things above, if you’re a follower of Christ like I am, we can easily get busy with day to day tasks and forget to take time to pray. For me, praying always makes me feel better, no matter what my mood was beforehand. It is important to step back and thank God for all of our blessings, even on our bad days. This is a simple goal to achieve by reminding yourself to make time to pray.
