It’s Friday, only a few hours away from 5pm, and you’re looking forward to the weekend. Whether you love your job or hate it, everyone looks forward to leaving the office for the weekend. There are some things in the office that have to be handled before you can get away. Doing these five things before you leave work on Friday will not only help you be able to relax and unwind on the weekend, but allow you to come into Monday ready for a great week.
1) Answer any pertinent emails
You don’t like when people don’t answer your emails so don’t leave them feeling the same way. You don’t want to have to even think about work emails on the weekend. Try and go through your inbox to handle any emails that need replies before you head out the door.
Your boss wants to know the progress on a project? Answer now, even if you haven’t made much progress. Need to let someone know about lunch plans for Monday? Take care of it before you shut off your computer for the weekend. You’ll feel so much better when you leave the office. Not to mention, you won’t have to play catch up on Monday morning.
2) Clean up around your desk
If you clean up your desk before you leave on Friday, you’ll come in to a fresh, clean desk on Monday. This will help you prepare for the week ahead. Throw away any papers you don’t need. Put all your paper clips back in their pesky holder. Sweep the crumbs from your lunch into the garbage can. You’ll feel better about your life when you come in on Monday.
3) Think about what you accomplished that week
By the end of the week, no matter what field you work in, you’ll have accomplished a lot. Did you finish that project you’ve been working on? Awesome. How about that book you were supposed to read and review? Cool. Before you leave on Friday, think about how much you accomplished that week. Not only will you feel confident about your performance and therefore allow yourself to relax, you’ll also know where you stand in your work so that you can really prepare your tasks for the next week.
4) Clean your coffee mug
This shouldn’t have to be said, but unfortunately it does. Clean out your coffee mug before you leave work on Friday. Give it a good scrubbing and a chance to dry properly. You and everyone in the office will be thankful. No one wants to drink from a mug that’s been harboring three-day old coffee in it.
This isn’t possible for all jobs, and that’s okay, but if you are able, before you leave the office on Friday, you should disconnect. Turn off your email notifications. Let your boss and coworkers know that they won’t be able to reach you this weekend. Be present with your friends and family. Don’t let your career dominate your life. Disconnecting on the weekend, even for 48 hours, will allow you to come in on Monday refreshed and revitalized and ready to take on the week.
