Being roommates with someone can be hard, but let’s make it easier by sharing these 5 secrets.

Create a chores list.

Living with one or more people means there’s going to be more trash, dishes, dirt, and of course hair –isn’t that right ladies? Create a chores list where you and your roommates rotate duties each week. This way, no one person is always cleaning or always taking out the trash. You can also check duties off as they’re done, this holds each roommate accountable and keeps your house clean.

Go grocery shopping together.

Afraid your roommates might eat all your favorite snacks? Or maybe, you don’t want to be the one buying toilet paper every time? Going out to the store together helps make you aware of what each person is buying for themselves and allows you to split the cost of shared items. Plus, it’s a super fun, roomie-bonding adventure!

Make use of your common living space.

Whether you’re living in a dorm room, apartment, or house, using the common living areas can serve two purposes. First being that this area can act as a quiet get away, especially if you share a bedroom. Second, you can all use this space to bond and have fun, rather than shutting yourself in your bedroom all day. If you live in an apartment or house, you can make this space your own by decorating; this is another great way to bond with your roommates.

Taco Tuesdays.

Set aside one day a week (or more) to have group meals. Rather than each person cooking their own dinner every night, cook a group dinner! This saves time and food, and it’s a great opportunity to wind down and discuss “what’s new” with the people around you. Taco Tuesdays are always a hit, but maybe make up something new just for you and your roommates to share.

Communicate.

It’s important to establish whether you’re a clean freak, night owl, or entertainer, right from the very beginning. If you don’t like having a lot of people over or have really loud music playing into all hours of the night, don’t be afraid to make that known. Additionally, share your class and work schedules with your roommates, this helps with establishing balance and understanding between everyone.
