It’s hard to be a public face of the Trump administration, but one of the women with the hardest jobs in the administration right now is Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the new White House Press Secretary. Since she seems to only be rising within the administration and you’ll definitely be seeing, and and hearing, more of her, here are six things you need to know about Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
She is Mike Huckabee’s daughter
I feel the need to start by addressing the elephant in the room. Yes, she is the daughter of former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. She’s not related to Bernie Sanders. Sarah is very close with her father and says that they talk every single day. While no doubt her father’s role in government has inspired her and helped her along the way, it’s simply incorrect to state she only holds her current position thanks to her father. In case you forgot, he was one of Trump’s competitors for the nomination. As you’ll learn later, Sarah has an impressive resume of her own making.
She has significant campaign experience with her dad and others
Sarah isn’t new to the world of politics and campaigns. She first got her start on campaigns when her father was running for re-election in Arkansas in 2002. She also worked on his 2008 and 2016 presidential campaigns, the latter before joining the Trump campaign. Outside of the family business though, she worked in the swing state of Ohio for George W Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign as a field representative.
She’s a married mother of three
Trump has many working mothers in his administration and Sarah Huckabee Sanders certainly makes pulling double duty look easy. Her husband, Bryan Sanders, and she were married in 2010 and they have three children together, two girls and a boy. A love for Republican politics is strong in their household, because Bryan is a political consultant himself and has worked on numerous campaigns, including her father’s. They reportedly met during his 2008 presidential bid.
She was with Donald Trump behind the scenes before he won the White House
When Trump moved into the White House, he brought Sarah with him. Huckabee Sanders wasn’t a new face to the team. She joined the Trump team in February of 2016, after her father had withdrew his candidacy, but before it was clear that Trump had the nomination. She was a senior adviser on the campaign. Sanders focused on coalition building with faith leaders, second amendment advocates, and military supporters. Part of the reason she’s risen so high in the administration is because she understands Trump, something many people cannot comprehend. Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said that Sarah “understands America and understands the president. And she understands how to connect the two.”
She has quite a bit of real world business experience
While she does have a great deal of campaign experience, she’s also made a living in the business world. She started her own consulting firm, Second Street Strategies, has worked for other firms, and served in the Department of Education under the Bush 43 administration. She no doubt takes everything she learned from her days in the private sector and applies them to government. It’s no surprise that Trump, a businessman himself, appreciates that.
She’s not afraid to spice up her professional wardrobe
We all know that professional fashion choices can be a little boring. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is fighting that stigma and choosing some exciting patterns and colors for her on-camera briefings. Sarah has been seen even in Lilly Pulitzer, a welcome sight for young women looking to spice up their work wardrobes while still looking professional.
