Since discovering Netflix in college, I have gone through my fair share of TV shows, movies, and documentaries. Like any traditional college student, I spend a fair amount of time binge watching shows I don’t really have time to be watching. As I’m sure you know, there are many great political shows on Netflix such as Scandal and House of Cards. While I’m all for a good political drama, sometimes a change in pace can be greatly needed. Here is a list of my favorite non-political shows currently streaming on Netflix:
Starring Lauren Graham (known for her role as Lorelai on Gilmore Girls), Dax Shepard, and more, this show depicts the everyday challenges of modern family life. From marital problems to raising children, this show covers it all. The best part about this one is how relatable it is. The whole series is on Netflix, adding up to six heartwarming seasons.
The Vampire Diaries
This series is my current obsession. It premiered on September 10th, 2009, and ended this past spring on March 10, 2017. Starring Nina Dorbev, this supernatural drama focuses on a group of teenagers who find themselves living in a supernatural community. The town, Mystic Falls, has a history of evil occurrences. Throughout the series, the group tries to uncover the town secrets while maintaining relationships and friendships at the same time.
Staring the infamous Blake Lively and Leighton Meester, this one will have you hooked instantly. This series takes you on a journey through the lives of the most elite Manhattan Upper East siders. These A-listers are followed by their worst enemy, Gossip Girl, who shares their latest drama, scandals, and heartbreak via text messages.
Based on the original Beverly Hills 90210, and starring some of the same cast members, this series demonstrates what it’s like to be a teenager in the one and only Beverly Hills, California. We are all learning or have learned what the transition to adulthood is like, but it is different for these Hollywood A-listers. Relationships are tested as these teens make the transition from high school to adult life.
This one is a classic. I put off watching this series for years because I thought it was overrated. I, however, was wrong. This is one of those that you will watch over and over again and never get burnt out on. If you haven’t already watched it, I highly recommend watching this one from beginning to end.
This is a series I have followed for years and years. While it may be a bit overdramatic at times, it never disappoints. However (spoiler alert), don’t get too attached to your favorite character, because they most likely won’t be around for long. There are currently 13 seasons on Netflix, with the fourteenth still in progress on ABC.
Pretty Little Liars
In this series, 4 girls are haunted by an anonymous stranger, “A,” while they search for their missing friend, Allison. There are no secrets anymore, and A is everywhere. The entire 7 seasons can be found on Netflix. A spinoff titled “The Perfectionists” starring Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish is currently in the works.
