Summer is a time to recharge and enjoy time with friends and family. But, like any other season, it’s also a time to work on yourself! Self improvement should be continuous, and contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to be burdensome. Here are 9 fun and productive ways to improve yourself this summer:

1.Learn a new language

Even if it’s just some words and phrases, learning a new language is a great goal to set for the summer. Apps like Duolingo, Quizlet, iTalki, and Rosetta Stone can help you get started. Try to learn a certain number of vocabulary words each day, and you’ll be on your way. Watch TV and movies in your target language for extra practice.

  1. Learn how to code

Computational literacy is an increasingly important skill in today’s job market. Coding skills can impress recruiters and future employers. HTML, Javascript, and CSS are fairly easy to learn, and are a great start if you want to get coding. Codeacademy and W3Schools are great resources for learning how to code.

  1. Volunteer

Passionate about a cause? Want to improve your own community? Volunteer for a charity or nonprofit organization. You’ll feel great knowing you contributed to something greater than yourself.

  1. Get a summer job

You don’t need an internship to make money or improve your career prospects. You also don’t need a 4-page resume to get started. In fact, you can gain valuable skills and experience working as a waitress, lifeguard, or nanny. Every work experience counts.

  1. Take a class at a community college

Study something related to your major and earn credits toward your degree, or study something you’ve always been curious about but never had the time to investigate! There is so much to learn, and now’s the time!

  1. Start a side hustle

Find a way to turn your passion into a lucrative pastime. Love playing an instrument? Teach lessons to beginners! Love writing? Find an online platform to contribute to! You can also boost your income driving for Uber or Lyft.

  1. Start a journal

Track your daily habits, diet, and/or thoughts in a journal. Make to-do lists and assess your progress as you strive to achieve goals. During the rest of the year, you might feel too busy to journal. The summer is a great time to start this self-care habit.

  1. Start a new diet/fitness routine

If you’ve ever wanted to start a new diet but never had the time to plan the meals or try new recipes, the summer is the perfect time to experiment. Try a new exercise routine, too. Take a yoga, barre, or pilates class at a local fitness center. Find out what works for you, and you might have a routine for the whole year.

  1. Read more books

Check out your local library or Barnes & Noble for your favorite genre. Or, try a new genre altogether! You could be pleasantly surprised. Reading is so relaxing and enriching. Take advantage of your free time and pick up some books!
