American Privilege: Why We Are Privileged To Live In The USA

There is a lot of talk about privilege in the USA, and I’m not going to argue that some groups aren’t more privileged than others because that would be misleading. I will say that we are privileged, as American citizens, to live in this great country. As Americans, we have so many privileges that citizens in other countries dream of having. Here are a few of the reasons why we are privileged to live in the U.S.A.

We are privileged to live in a nation where we are granted so many freedoms and rights. We are able to live without fear that these rights will be stripped away from us. Living in America means that we are treated as humans with personal rights and freedom to act on these rights.

We’re privileged to be able to elect our leaders and vote on changes to be made to our country and the laws that govern us. Many foreign nations still have stipulations when it comes to voting, but in America, all law abiding citizens 18 and older can vote, which is a beautiful thing. This privilege has an impact on so many other privileges that we get to enjoy every single day.

We are privileged to be able to support businesses that align with our values, and refrain from buying from those that do not. If we cannot find a business that sells a certain product, we can start our own business or create the product for ourselves. So many American success stories have started with a product being created in a garage. This isn’t possible everywhere, but we have the ability to live our version of the American Dream. 

We are privileged to be able to attend college and get a degree in the field of our choice. Instead of being assigned a career or having college accessible for the highest class, we can choose whether or not we attend. We can also choose what degree to get, where to get it from, and how much debt we want to incur for our degree. While many college educations are costly, we can opt for cheaper options, apply for scholarships, etc so that we may live our dream. College education isn’t as accessible elsewhere. 

We are privileged to go to court when we are charged for committing a crime and plead our case in front of a judge and jury. We are also privileged to have the right to legal counsel, even if we cannot afford the bill. Our criminal justice system may not be perfect, but we are privileged to have access to so many resources if we are convicted. We are also privileged to have a jury of peers to help decide whether or not we are guilty of a crime. 

We are privileged to worship whomever we choose, however we choose, and whenever we choose without fear of government overreach. While so many are forced to practice their religion in private throughout the world, we can practice our religion without fear of repercussion from the government. 

We are privileged to live in a land of opportunity. It isn’t possible for the everyday man to become a millionaire in every country, but it’s possible in America. There are so many stories of success stories of small businesses turning into large corporations in the U.S.A. It takes hard work, determination, and dedication, but opportunities are endless in America. 

We are privileged to live in a nation that doesn’t dictate how we spend our time, where we spend our money, how much education we receive, who we worship, or what we do in the privacy of our homes. Laws and regulations are put in place to protect our freedoms, not remove them, which is why we are privileged to live in the United States of America.
