Days after Michelle Obama said that the Republican side of the room is “literally gray and white,” a Democratic candidate running against 33-year-old female GOP incumbent Representative Elise Stefanik called the congresswoman a “child.”

You read that correctly. Steve Krieg, a member of a local school board in New York who decided to challenge Representative Stefanik for her seat, made the comments last night during a candidate’s forum. Krieg, an optometrist from Plattsburgh, New York, acknowledged the fact that he has been accused of being a sexist for some of the things he said about female candidate. However, this is not where the story begins.

In July, Krieg posted a comment on Rep. Stefanik’s Facebook page that read:

I intend to kick your stingy, money-grubbing, sniveling coward of a butt out of Congress. Don’t worry sweetie, you’re a little girl. You can always run home to Mommy and Daddy.”

At the forum on October 3, Krieg said that he had been accused of being a sexist. He said the following:

I have been accused of being sexist for calling Elise a little girl, and I probably deserve to be called a sexist. I think most of us, if we admit it, have some of a sexist in us, some of a racist within us. It’s something if we’re decent people, we recognize within ourselves and we struggle with it all of our lives.”

Krieg also said:

I recognize her.  I’m not going to say a little girl. I recognize her as a child, and it has nothing to do with her age. I see her as a child because she’s a child. She thinks like a child. She has people set things up for her. She has people put their words in her mouth and she happily repeats them. And I think recognizing her, I would go after her in that way. And I apologize if that’s mean but that’s how I would do it.”

Krieg calls Rep. Stefanik a little girl insinuating she’s immature meanwhile he is the one leaving a juvenile comment. The irony is so real with this. His comments are not only sexist in nature, but they are also extremely condescending. Ask any female who has ever been called “sweetie” in an argument and you will see the fire in their eyes.

Elise Stefanik is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. That’s right; at the age of 30, she was elected to serve the 21st District of New York in the United States House of Representatives. She won her 2014 election with 55.2% of the vote and in 2016, she won her re-election with 63% of the vote.

Krieg calls Rep. Stefanik a “child.” Right, well this successful Representative that he is calling a child is a Harvard graduate, worked for the Bush administration on the Domestic Policy Council, worked in the office of the White House Chief of Staff under Joshua Bolten, worked as communications director for the Foreign Policy Initiative, worked as the policy director during the 2012 campaign for former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, and even managed Paul Ryan’s debate preparations when he was running for Vice President. She accomplished all this before even running for her seat in Congress. Sounds like a pretty long list of accomplishments for a “child.”

Luckily, Steve Krieg is being met with quite a bit of criticism for his remarks, even catching some heat from fellow Democrats.  Mr. Krieg, welcome to politics, where there is no room for children OR school yard bullies.
