Former First Lady Barbara Pierce Bush has passed away on April 17, 2018 according to an official statement from The Office of George H.W. Bush.

Barbara Bush was a champion for literacy programs during her long, distinguished public career.

She served her country as First Lady with grace, courage and patriotism.

Her marriage to former President George H.W. Bush is the longest marriage of any presidential couple in American history.

Their love story is quite the fairy tale. She married her first love and continued their journey together for 73 years.

Barbara is the only woman besides Abigail Adams to be both wife and mother to a president.

Her son, former President George W. Bush said in a statement:

“My dear mother has passed on at age 92. Laura, Barbara, Jenna, and I are sad, but our souls are settled because we know hers was. Barbara Bush was a fabulous First Lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love, and literacy to millions. To us, she was so much more. Mom kept us on our toes and kept us laughing until the end. I’m a lucky man that Barbara Bush was my mother. Our family will miss her dearly, and we thank you all for your prayers and good wishes.”

Many, across party lines, have issued touching and heartwarming statements about the former First Lady, which shows just how wonderful of a person she really was.

“Bar, you have made my life full of everything I could ever dream of—my complete happiness should be a token of my love for you.” — George H.W. Bush to his fiancée, Barbara Pierce in 1943.

Barbara is survived by her husband, 5 children and 17 grandchildren.
