On May 19th, the cultural phenomenon that is Game of Thrones comes to an end. At least, the stories of these characters come to an end after eight seasons. You’re mourning, I know, and you’re probably wondering how you’re going to fill the void in your life. What will you read? What will you talk about with your friends? Is the next George RR Martin book ever coming? Will you lose the will to go on? Maybe, but you don’t have to, because if you like Game of Thrones and want more things like it in your life after the series finale, check out these options.

The Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard

If you want a book series with a little magic, lots of political intrigue and death, but also a little romance, you’ll want to dive into this series by Victoria Aveyard.  There’s a strong fantasy element throughout that will hook you. A huge bonus is that all of the books are released–four big novels as well as several story collections.  It’ll help fill your time post-Thrones.

Reign (television show)–4 SeasonsIf you’re into historical shows with sex and spies and political plotting for the throne, you’ll love Reign. It aired on the CW, so take that as a warning, but there are beautiful people, absolutely breath-taking costumes, and four seasons of intrigue as we follow the life of Mary Queen of Scots through her first marriage and beyond.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha ShannonI personally haven’t read this book yet, but it’s been highly anticipated and it’s size makes it a sure-fire way to spend a good weekend. This is a standalone novel, as far as has been announced, but it’s got magic, strong women, a whole new world, and more. You won’t be able to put it down, so prepare your wrists accordingly.

The Tudors (television show)–4 SeasonsAnother history based show, The Tudors aired on Showtime and followed the tumultuous reign of King Henry VIII through his six wives. There’s romance, death, political mechanizations, and everything you get in Game of Thrones minus the dragons. The series is all wrapped up, so you can binge through four seasons or take your time.

Fire & Blood: A Game of Thrones History by George RR MartinA Thrones prequel series is in the works, but take your own tour through the history of Westeros with this book George RR Martin wrote that is set 300 years before the events of the show (and original books). It’s perfect for those of you that love the Targaryens. Plus, it’s over 700 pages, so it will distract you from your sorrows over the show ending for a bit.
