You’ve heard it all when it comes to bettering yourself. You’ve more than likely heard “do your best”, “be your best”, “make good choices” … so on and so forth. So if we’ve heard these things so many times, what is the best way to do this? If you’re like me, you have really big dreams, and I have no doubt I will accomplish them.  No matter how big your dreams are, no matter how good your intentions are, you’ll always have negativity that comes along with it from people who try and discourage you. I have heard everything from “you’re just a girl” and “it’s a though world out there” and everything in between. While I hear those comments, I choose to ignore them. I don’t let others lack of vision and small minds cloud what I feel is my purpose for being here. So, how do you accomplish these goals and be confident and happy? By being the best you that you can possibly be. So to all the future lawyers, doctors, teachers, dentists, politicians, designers, public safety officers, bakers, architects or whatever you may choose to be- you can do it, and you will do it if you set your mind to it. As the man himself once said, “My philosophy of life is that if we make up our mind what we are going to make of our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose – somehow we win out.”- Ronald Reagan

1) Establish your goals

Determining what your goals are and what you want to do is ultimately the first step. How are you going to improve if you don’t have anything you have decided to improve on? Maybe your goals are to spend more time with your family, make the dean’s list, make more friends—whatever it may be remember that these can (and probably will) change. And that is okay!

2) Determine if what you are about to do aligns with your goals that you previously set.

Learning to prioritize is key to succeeding in life. The trick to this is deciding what is and is not worthy or your time/attention. Ask yourself, is doing ______ going to be something that will help me in the long run?

3) Do your best

Cliché, I know, you’ve heard it a million times, but it is true! Put your full effort into whatever you are doing. Stay late in the office, spend time rereading that essay you wrote- whatever it is, give it 100%.

4) Find a mentor or role model

FFL recently posted an article about the importance of having a mentor is. Role models are a really great way to advance both your personal and work life. Mentors are there to guide you and can typically provide great tips.

5. Love yourself

Before you can be the best you possible, you have to love yourself. Loving yourself is so important because you have to realize how amazing you truly are. Learn how to accept yourself because you are valuable and have something nothing else the world can offer.

So go forth and be the strong, confident and best you possible. The world is your oyster and there is an endless amount of possibilities out there. Seize the opportunities you are given; after all, the world is waiting for what it is that you have to offer.
