For many, summer is the ideal time to catch up on sleep, watch Netflix, and take a break from reality. While a breach in your rigorous routine can be relaxing, it should be more of a reward rather than routine. Beginning a productive day can be the most difficult part. Here are ten tips for increasing your productivity immediately, from one lazy girl to another.

1) Begin your day with a workout

I already know what you’re thinking – “no way”. For many of us, working out is not enjoyable in the slightest. The key to enjoying a workout is making it your own. Whether this routine includes yoga, cardio, or weightlifting, do something that you enjoy. This workout can be as long and rigorous as you make it. Not only is this ideal for your health, but your brain will also release endorphins which will increase your mood. You will already be starting your day with one thing checked off the to-do list.

2) Reward yourself after completing a task

Many of us are guilty of putting off long and daunting tasks until the last possible minute. However, foreseeing a reward makes it much easier to push through. Whether this may be coffee, a nap, or a trip to the mall, these small rewards will allow you to accomplish the larger task at hand.

3) Manage your time well

Even if I have my laptop open, notes out, and a cup of coffee in hand, this does not necessarily mean that I am getting things done. You are responsible for yourself – be your own manager. When you get off-task, there is not always someone there to correct you. Make sure to be accountable in spending your time productively. You’ll thank yourself when you have completed all daily tasks and can finally relax.

4) Eat healthy

The phrase “you are what you eat” has remained true for the entirety of my life. Eating out can be bliss, but when trying to focus on a vital assignment, feeling full and tired is a definite downfall. Fill your body with things that make you feel reenergized such as leafy greens and whole grains. Drinking coffee and chewing gum are a few extra things that can help your mind stay on point.

5) Take breaks

When in the zone, it can be difficult to tell yourself to stop and take a break. Taking small breaks every 30 to 45 minutes will give you a small boost to avoid exhaustion. Take time to reflect on what you have accomplished and what you still have to work on.

6) Put your phone away

Today, it’s rare to see someone torn away from technology. Tuning out social media and text messaging will help more than you may think. When on a phone, minutes turn to hours leading to an overall decrease in productivity. Have the strength to put your phone out of sight and direct your full attention to what you’re working on.

7) Utilize your planner as much as possible

Planners can either be neglected or used as a powerful tool. Trusting yourself to remember each individual task and detail that you need to complete is not recommended – we are only human. Marking things off as they are completed gives a small sense victory while helping stay on track for your day. Allow your planner to be a hub for any information you need to take on the go. Carry it anywhere and everywhere.

8) Keep your eye on the end goal

When compiled in loads of work, it becomes arduous to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Remember why you began the task and how you will feel after completing it. You may become flustered when losing sight of importance. Stay motivated by keeping your eye on the prize.

9) Have reasoning behind each action

Why is what you’re doing important at the end of the day? Have strong and well-composed reasons behind each individual task that you complete. If it is not contributing to yours and others’ well-being, question if it’s worth doing in the first place.

10) Create your ideal workspace

For some, it is utterly impossible to be productive in a cluttered workspace. For others, it is exceedingly difficult to be productive in a pristine workspace. Whatever your ideal is, create it. This will help you focus on your work instead of busy surroundings.

Being productive can be tough yet extremely fulfilling. In the long summer months, laziness is beyond tempting. The world is at your fingertips, you just need to begin. Get out of bed, turn off the Netflix, and complete your checklist now – you’ll thank yourself later.
