The 2020 election season is in full swing, and here at FFL we’re excited to see that there has been a surge in Republican women running for public office. We love to celebrate conservative women in all capacities and give our readers a look at what they stand for.

The filing date for the congressional races for 2020 in Georgia recently passed. Georgia will hold its primaries on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 and will host the general election on November 3, 2020.

15 Republican women have filed to run for Congress in Georgia. Here’s some information about each.

Kelly Loeffler (U.S. Senate special election)

Loeffler was nominated to the U.S. Senate in December 2019 following the resignation of Senator Johnny Isakson. Before being nominated, she was a businesswoman and CEO of a bitcoin trading platform in Atlanta. She is pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, and a staunch ally of President Trump’s. Her priorities include promoting job growth and fair trade practices, protecting members of the military and people affected by sex trafficking and the opioid epidemic, and addressing issues with healthcare costs and the deficit.

Kandiss Taylor (U.S. Senate special election)

Taylor is a schoolteacher who wants to “give Georgia…an option that is conservative, fair, and middle-class”. She has held many roles in the public school system. Her main policy priorities are education, mental health, lowering taxes, and protecting farmers and small businesses. She is also pro-life and stands for gun rights. Cook PVI rates this seat as Leans R so whoever wins the heated Republican primary has a good chance at winning the seat.

Vivian Childs (GA-02)

Childs has been involved in Republican politics since 2012 and ran for office in 2014 and 2015. She has held leadership positions in the Georgia Black Republican Council, the National Diversity Coalition for Trump, Georgia Federation of Republican Women, and Georgia Republican Executive Committees. She is a staunch Republican. Cook PVI rates this district as D+6.

Johsie Cruz (GA-04)

Cruz is a self-described “moderate conservative…and defender of the Constitution and Bill of Rights…”. She immigrated to the United States from Venezuela in 1995 and was a member of Latinos for Trump of Georgia in 2016 and Latinos for Kemp in 2018. She is pro-life and pledges to fight for more jobs, legal immigration, fiscal responsibility, and putting America first. Cook PVI rates this district as D+24.

Angela Stanton-King (GA-05)

A former reality TV star and author, Stanton-King was pardoned by President Trump in February after serving time in 2004 following her participation in a carjacking. She is running against Rep. John Lewis, but she says that this isn’t about replacing Rep. Lewis, it’s about “fighting for justice”. She is a supporter of President Trump according to her Facebook and Twitter accounts. Cook PVI rates this district as D+34.

Mykel Barthelemy (GA-06)

Barthelemy is an author and businesswoman and is one of three women running in Georgia’s 6th district. She describes herself as a Christian conservative and patriot, and her priorities reflect those descriptions: pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, support of veterans and religious freedom, school choice, limited government, and strong borders. Whoever wins the primary will be looking to flip the Democrat-held seat in a district that is rated R+8.

Karen Handel (GA-06)

Handel is running to reclaim her seat after being ousted by Rep. Lucy McBath in 2018 by just over 3,000 votes. She is a business consultant and former Georgia Secretary of State. When she was elected in 2018, she was the first Republican woman to represent Georgia in Congress. Her top priorities are increasing the number of jobs, controlling federal spending, fixing America’s healthcare system, strengthening our border, and protecting our 2nd Amendment rights.

Paulette Smith (GA-06)

A Florida native and a businesswoman, Smith is running to represent the 6th Congressional District. She is a self-described conservative who pledges to defend Constitutional rights and values. Her campaign website states that she is pro-life, pro-wall, and pro-immigration reform. Last year, she was elected as the District 11 GOP Chairman. Cook Political rates this race as a Toss-Up, but one that leans Democratic.

Lisa Babbage (GA-07)

Babbage is running to represent Georgia’s 7th Congressional District, a seat currently held by Republican Rob Woodall. Woodall, who won in 2018 by 433 votes, has announced that he will not be seeking re-election. Babbage is an author and educator who has lived in Georgia since the late 1990s. She is staunchly conservative and leans on the fact that she is one of the few candidates that knows what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck. PVI rates the district as R+7 despite Woodall’s close 2018 election.

Lynne Homrich (GA-07)

A self-described political outsider and businesswoman, Homrich has lived in the Atlanta area for over 30 years and is the head of a women’s empowerment nonprofit. Her main policy focuses are job growth, healthcare and education reform, fortifying our national defense, and dedicating more federal dollars to transportation and infrastructure. She’s pro-life, pro-gun, and pro-immigration reform. PVI rates this race as a Toss-Up, but one that leans towards Republican.

Renee Unterman (GA-07)

Unterman was born and raised in the district and holds degrees from Georgia State and the University of Georgia. She is currently a Georgia State Senator for District 45. While in the Senate, she authored a pro-life “heartbeat bill”, voted for the largest income tax cut in Georgia’s history, and voted for a pro-2A “stand your ground” bill. She is dedicated to growing our economy, improving infrastructure, and lowering the cost of healthcare.

Maria Strickland (GA-09)

With current GA-09 Representative Doug Collins announcing his run for U.S. Senate, the race for Georgia’s 9th CD is wide open. Strickland is a retired law enforcement officer and also bills herself as a political outsider. She supports President Trump and wants to increase funding for law enforcement, help our nation’s veterans, and wants to eliminate the Department of Education.

Kellie Weeks (GA-09)

Weeks is a small business owner and lifelong resident of Georgia. She has fundraised thousands of dollars for Camp Twitch and Shout, a summer camp for children with Tourette’s Syndrome. Her primary issues are 2nd Amendment rights, term limits, and mental health reform. In an R+31 district, it’s safe to say that whoever makes it out of the Republican primary will win the seat.

Becky Hites (GA-13)

Hites is a financial analyst and a small business owner in Georgia. She is a “Trumplican” who lists several platform points for her campaign, including reducing the size of the federal government, reducing government spending, protecting the unborn, and reforming trade deals and tax policy. Cook PVI rates this district as D+20.

Marjorie Greene (GA-14)

Green is a businesswoman running to represent Georgia’s 14th CD. Her main priorities are passing a Balanced Budget amendment, reforming the VA system to take care of our veterans, defending the right to life and the 2nd Amendment, stopping socialism, and securing our borders. In an R+27 district with the sitting Republican declining to run for re-election, the winner of the Republican primary should have no issues holding onto the seat.

Republican Annette Davis Jackson has also qualified for the U.S. Senate but little to no relevant campaign information could be found.
