Here at Future Female Leaders, we’re big fans of Nikki Haley. The governor turned UN Ambassador is a role model to so many conservative women and such a fierce advocate of conservative values on an international stage. We even have some FFL apparel featuring what has come to be Haley’s signature phrase “with all due respect, I don’t get confused.”

Her new book, on sale now, is even titled With All Due Respect and in her press tour for the book, which follows her first book, Can’t Is Not an Option, she revealed the true story behind her now infamous comment.

The statement first gained notoriety in April 2018 when Haley, then US Ambassador to the United Nations, was talking about new sanctions against Russia in regards to their actions in Ukraine and Crimea.

“You will see that Russia sanctions will be coming down,” Haley said, because she had been told that explicitly. She expected Treasury Secretary Mnuchin to announce them this coming Monday.

Those sanctions had been a frequent discussion with the president and his teams, according to Haley, but after she said something publicly about it, White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow said that Haley had “gotten ahead of the curve” and that there “might have been” some “confusion” about things.

It turns out Trump himself had been wavering, but no one had told Haley before she went on Face the Nation to discuss it.

Haley’s now infamous retort was given in a statement to Fox News. “With all due respect, I don’t get confused,” she said. And a Queen was crowned.

Did Kudlow apologize? You bet your buck he did.

“Nikki, I’m calling you with my tail between my legs,” Haley writes that Kudlow said. “You know how much I love you.” He later told The New York Times, “She was certainly not confused. I was wrong to say that–totally wrong.”

As Haley discusses in her book, which you should absolutely read for this story and more, her defense was not about being wrong, it was about protecting integrity and standing up for herself, and here at FFL, we love it!
