Ahead of the 2020 elections, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is branching out of its usual forms of communication and taking to the airwaves of the 21st century – podcasts. The NRSC launched a new podcast on Tuesday titled 20 for 20. Senior Advisor Matt Whitlock and Executive Director Kevin McLaughlin host the twenty minute episodes that are set to drop every Tuesday.

The show is billed as “a political podcast that’s not really about politics”, and this tagline is correct for the most part. 20 for 20 is meant to introduce listeners to the person behind the elected member of Congress. The first episode features NRSC Chairman Todd Young (R-IN), and for the first 18 of the episode’s total 20 minutes, there is no political talk. The first topic is discussion about a typical weekend in the Young household in Indiana. The parallels between the modern state of politics and Game of Thrones are highlighted, but quickly brushed over in favor of the Young family’s plan for Thanksgiving.

One nugget of info that the hosts allude to is the fact that they talk to family members, friends, and former and current staffers in order to dig up facts about their interviewees. This research incites a conversation about Senator Young’s love of Taco Bell — he claims he is a traditionalist in his ordering habits but I don’t know anyone who ever went straight for the bean burrito. It also leads to a story about Young’s crusade to update the Senate gym in order to accommodate his P90X routine.

The most personal part is hearing Young talk about his wife and kids. He details how he met his wife after moving back to Indiana following his service in the Marine Corps and what his four kids dressed up as for Halloween. His costume is too good to pass up linking here.

Based on the trailer, the show is already set to host Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), and Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), but if the backdrop gives us any hints, we will also see Senators Martha McSally (R-AZ), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), and Susan Collins (R-ME), among many others. Next week’s episode features the Majority Leader himself — make sure to follow 20 for 20 on Twitter and on Spotify or Google!
