If we had a dollar for every time we heard…

1. “You’re only a Republican because your parents are”

This is a fascinating thing to hear from people, especially feminists, because it’s 2016 and I’m fully capable of thinking for myself. My parents never talked politics and I didn’t grow up involved in them. I became involved when I took a government class, learned where I aligned, and went off to college where I joined the College Republicans. This wasn’t because my parents were Republicans, this was because I was a Republican. To this day, my parents don’t understand how I got so involved in politics or why I love it so much.

2. “Why do you hate yourself?”

While I appreciate your concern, I don’t hate myself. In fact, the University of Chicago has been studying the happiness of people. It has been found that conservative women are the happiest amongst the population and they are significantly happier than liberal women. I don’t hate myself, I love myself, my gender, and my ability to think for myself. Just because someone thinks differently than you, it doesn’t mean they hate you or that they hate themselves; it simply means we see things from a different perspective.

3. “You’re every type of “-ist” and “phobe” in the book”

If you haven’t been called a racist, homophobe, sexist, Islamophobe, xenophobe, or even a terrorist, give it time. You will be called these things; not because you are any of them, in fact, you probably don’t fall under any of them, but they will call you this because you’ve won an argument. Take these worth a grain of salt because it’s rooted in anger, not facts. They also call us these things daily so once you get called one of these things by a Democrat, you’ve officially been welcomed to the GOP.

4. “You get all your information from Fox News”

More often than not, they refer to Fox News as “Faux News” and while they think they’re being extremely clever in their fight against Fox, these people are getting their one liners from Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews. I really only watch Fox when there are primary or caucus results, when there is a debate, or if I know my candidate will be speaking on a show. I do research things for myself and generally don’t think that because one person says it, it’s true.

5. “You’re only Republican because you are rich”

I wish I was as rich as everyone thinks I am. I’m in college, I’m eating frozen foods for dinner and consider going out to eat a treat. I don’t get new clothes unless it’s at Christmas or my birthday and I don’t get to treat myself to manicures. I am not rich. In fact, not many Republicans are rich. But even if they are rich, why is it a bad thing to have acquired wealth? We need to stop punishing success and rewarding failure. If you want to know what micro-aggressions are, just wait until someone ridicules you for having money.

6. “You’re all old angry rich white men”

This argument is so 2012. The Democrats have no minority candidates. The Republicans have had two Latinos (Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio), one African American (Ben Carson), and an Indian (Bobby Jindal); three of which are still in the race with the two Latinos being in the top three. Hillary Clinton is also extremely rich while Bernie Sanders is the definition of an angry old white guy. Identity politics is dead to everyone except Democrats.

7. “You ignore facts and science”

If I really had a dollar for every time I heard this, I would be in the highest tax bracket. Science confirms all of my beliefs honestly. I know that life begins at conception because of science. I know that the Earth goes through global warming and global cooling because of science. I know that capitalism works best because of science. I know that guns protect more people than they harm because of science. Science doesn’t work against Republicans; it works for us. We need to stop letting the other side tell us what what science says and tell them what the science means.

8. “You’re close-minded”

We’re constantly told that we are close-minded, but this is being told to us by the people who hate the very thought that I exist simply because I think differently. These are people who have the COEXIST stickers but will tell you that you’re worthless, they hate you, or name call you until they make middle schoolers look like the most mature people on the planet.

9. “You must like Trump because you’re a Republican”

No. No, I don’t like Trump. Other Republicans might like Trump. I don’t like Trump. For someone probably teaches that generalizations are a bad thing, you’re very quick to think that I like Trump. But I don’t so here we sit with you looking immature and me looking like I just won an awfully-short lived debate.

10. “You’re heartless”

Yes, because I’m heartless for wanting guns to protect myself, my family, and my friends. I’m heartless because I believe life begins at conception and I want innocent children to see the light of day. I’m so heartless for not wanting the government to take a ton of money that I’ve earned for their wasteful spending. I’m extremely heartless for loving the United States military for all of their sacrifices. You call it heartless, I call it compassion and having the knowledge to understand that just because someone thinks differently doesn’t mean they’re heartless.

We hear these things all too much. It’s time for identity politics to go the way of the dodo. Thank you to all you strong conservatives out there who constantly fight the good fight even they we listen to Democrats repeat the same ten lies time and time again. Continue fighting for your beliefs because you’re not alone.
