Yasmine Mohammed’s Unveiled Reveals How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam

We all know the saying, “don’t talk about religion, politics, or money on the first date.” Islam, especially radical Islam, has been on the steady incline of the world’s most controversial topics for decades.

Yasmine Mohammed, a self-proclaimed ex-Muslim, has written Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam to highlight the brutality and abuse that comes from growing up in a radically Islamic home, forced to abide by Sharia law. 

Yasmine explicitly tells of her physical, emotional, and sexual abuse from her family. She discusses in-depth concepts such as victim blaming, outdated and abusive gender roles, mental health, and even terrorism.

As Yasmine tells her story, she notes the hypocrisy from the left. She recalls an episode from Bill Maher’s show in 2014, where he discussed radial Islam with guest and author, Sam Harris. Yasmine writes that Maher had mentioned to his audience that they “applaud for principles like freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and equality for women, minorities, and LGBT, but the applause would abruptly halt if anyone mentioned that these principles were not being upheld in the Muslim world” (3). She further notes that Barbie now wears a hijab “so she won’t entice men who might rape her” (273). For women surviving under Sharia law, the hijab is often a symbol of oppression. In the West, it’s championed out of fear of being offensive. 

Yasmine encourages her readers to stand up for those who are suffering because of radical Islam, especially other women. She started the organization Free Hearts Free Minds, to help free those being oppressed under Sharia law and started #NoHijabDay to encourage women to fight back. 

She ends her book with a call to action: “Women in the East must work together, and women in the West—please reach back your hand and pull women in the East up the road to equality with you. Anyone who believes in freedom and equality, please support the freedom fighters in Muslim-majority countries. They need you” (275).

As someone who knows very little about Islam and the Middle East, Unveiled was an extreme eye opener for me. I knew things were bad, but I didn’t know how bad. Sure, we have our battles to fight here in the US, but we should never take for granted how good we truly have it. Yasmine talks about today’s generation of young women having “no legitimate problems to overcome, they invented problems so they could fulfill their desire to solve them” (272). The way to help these women is to love and embrace them, not ignore them out of fear of being called islamophobic or racist. By claiming to accept these abuses and the sexism as a part of religious culture, is to completely disenfranchise these women who need help; and this is exactly what the left does.
