5 Republican Women Who Won Big This Week

It was a busy week. Let’s not waste time. Here are the 5 stories you need to know about Republican women this week.

NIKKI SHARES PRESIDENTIAL DECISION  

It’s a question we’ve all been asking of Ambassador Nikki Haley: will she, or won’t she? The 2024 contender was asked if she would support President Trump should he run again in 2024. Haley told reporter Meg Kinnard that yes, she would support Trump, and that “I would not run if President Trump ran, and I would talk to him about it. That’s something that we will have a conversation about, at some point.” So all eyes return to Trump as to if he is running again, and if not, to whom he will give his endorsement.

MACE INTERVIEWED ON ABC NEWS LIVE PRIMETIME

As part of “The First 100 Days” special, Rep. Nancy Mace (SC-01) was interviewed on ABC News Live primetime, where she talked about the record number of women elected to Congress this term. Rep. Mace shared, “2020 was a great year to add to our diversity within the party. We need to do it every two years until our faces do reflect the rest of America.”  118 women hold seats in the House of Representatives, comprising 27.1% of the 435 members in 2021. These women represent 36 states: 87 are Democrats and 31 are Republicans.

LETLOW SWORN IN

Rep. Julia Letlow was officially sworn in after winning the special election to fill her late husband’s congressional seat. Letlow’s two young children were present, with son Jeremiah, 3 years old, holding the Bible. Rep. Letlow’s swearing in gives Republicans 212 seats in the House, compared to Democrats’ 218 seats. As tie votes do not pass the House,  Democrats cannot afford lose more than two votes in order to pass legislation, should Republicans vote along party lines. 

GOP WOMEN LEAD BALANCED BUDGET COMMISSION

Sen. Cynthia Lummis is the lead sponsor of the Sustainable Budget Act, legislation that will create a new bipartisan national commission that reduces the deficit and will balance the federal budget within 10 years. “We are on an unsustainable trajectory. We’ve become numb to the word ‘trillion,’” said Sen. Lummis (R-WY). “At the rate we are going, the United States could soon spend more money on interest on the national debt than it does on defense.” Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) is also a co-sponsor of the bill.

STEFANIK RAISES SEVEN FIGURES FOR SIXTH TIME

Rep. Elise Stefanik raised over seven figures in fundraising dollars for the sixth consecutive quarter. Rep. Stefanik, now in her 4th term, brought in $1.1 million in Q1 for her own re-election campaign. Rep. Stefanik’s leadership pack, E-PAC, has fundraised over $1.4 million to female candidates since the start of the 2020 cycle. In Q1, E-PAC raised nearly $100,000 and ended March with over $311,000 cash on hand.
