I love books and I love book clubs, which is only further augmented by the fact that some amazing famous women are now operating their own book clubs! The goal isn’t to make a profit. It’s to build connections among readers, promote great books, and engage with a book on a new level. One of the recent celebrity book clubs announcements came from our favorite fictional lawyer and southern-styling actress, Reese Witherspoon. You know her from Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama, Election, and more, but now she’s just as well-known in some circles for the books she promotes.
Reese’s book club is called Hello Sunshine and it launched in July 2017 and has picked a book each month. There’s of course a major social media presence for it, but just as importantly, Reese’s selection of the books does major things for it in stores. Many publishers release new covers of the book highlighting that it is a Hello Sunshine selection. Reese is also optioning many of the books for film and TV with her own production company.
The October 2019 pick was Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much To Do (And More Life to Live) by Eve Rodsky. The book is about creating more equitable marriages, dividing household labor, all that jazz. It’s not the usual book club pick, but it’s gotten really good reviews, and if Reese recommends it, I trust her. She’s not the usual feminist type that recommends books that are super far out there, so I’m sure this book has some insight we’ll all appreciate, though I’m not yet a parent or domestic partner.
Personally though, I always like seeing what Reese recommends, even if I don’t read it until later, because she picks a wide range of books for her club and they almost always are geared towards women. She also does a good job vacillating between “literary” picks and “genre” fiction, which is good for me who likes well-written books that have a bit of a mystery to them as well. Both The Library Book and The Lying Game, which Reese selected, are some of the best books I’ve read recently! I’m super excited to read Little Fires Everywhere soon, and see the adaptation that Reese is producing!
