Planned Parenthood’s reach into the American mind, whether you love them or hate them, is unprecedented. The organization is discussed in almost any major debate between politicians, brought up in elections, make a presence on college campuses, and are even in arguments between families at holidays or reunions. In addition, Planned Parenthood has creeped more into our lives by influencing the things we consume daily: arts and entertainment.

That’s right. Planned Parenthood’s Caren Spruch is the Senior Director of Arts & Entertainment. According to her LinkedIn, her job description and self-biography is as follows:

Caren Spruch is the Senior Director, Arts & Entertainment Engagement, for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. She founded the organization’s program to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights through pop culture. Caren collaborates with producers, directors, and writers to advise them on incorporating health and advocacy messages into their scripts. She also works closely with prominent television and film actors to engage them in publicly supporting Planned Parenthood’s mission. Caren executive produced Across the Line, a virtual reality film, and co-produced 5 short films with Refinery29.”

Yes, you should be alarmed. Caren Spruch and Planned Parenthood have consulted on over 150 productions since 2014. They have consulted on the shows “Shrill” and “Jane the Virgin.”  In fact, the New York Times shares that abortion is being portrayed at “record levels” in film during 2019.

We have seen abortions be recently portrayed in shows such as:

  • Shrill

  • 13 Reasons Why

  • Scandal

  • Glow

  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

  • Jane the Virgin

  • Girls

  • Grey’s Anatomy

  • Orange is the New Black

  • and many more.

The problem isn’t that abortion is on television. In fact, I don’t care that shows choose to depict abortions because they honestly probably aren’t shows I’m watching or love. Why? Shows that celebrate abortions as a band-aid just aren’t my thing.

What I do care about is that Planned Parenthood, who receives federal funding, is using that funding to pay employees to go to Hollywood and promote abortions. Then, they simultaneously try to depict abortion as something that is a light, fluffy thing. They paint the picture that while the actual procedure might stink, the outcome is sunshine and rainbows. It is very scary to think that Planned Parenthood has this much influence over what we are seeing on our televisions or in theaters.

Planned Parenthood thinks abortion is something to smile about, cheer about, and promote under the guise of rose-colored lenses.

It is alarming to me that they are so proud of their work promoting abortions. In fact, they never seem to consult on films or shows wanting to get STD testing or obtaining birth control.

For an organization that seems to relentlessly shout from the rooftops that they offer much more services than just abortion, it seems like the focus of their efforts is abortions across the board.

Planned Parenthood pretends to be something they’re not all the time. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that they dedicate time, jobs, and resources to influencing Hollywood.
