I love a good morning podcast, especially one that takes less than 10 minutes, makes me feel absolutely SEEN by the podcaster, and benefits me tremendously. Usually, that means listening to a news recap, but recently, I discovered a brand new podcast that makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something while I brush my teeth and it’ll hopefully help me get my time management issues under control once and for all.

Before Breakfast is a daily podcast, with episodes less than ten minutes each, that aims to offer time management tips in a digestible way. The podcast is truly brand new, so there are only a few episodes out, but they’re great listens! Laura Vanderkam, the host, has written extensively on time management in the following books, all of which I recommend. She’s kind of an expert on the issue.

Juliet’s School of Possibilities: A Little Story About the Power of Priorities

Off the Clock: Feel Less Busy While Getting More Done

I Know How She Does It: How Successful Women Make the Most of Their Time

What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast: And Two Other Short Guides to Achieving More at Work and at Home

168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think

I’m obsessed with Vanderkam right now. She pioneered a time project in which successful women tracked their time in 30 minute increments for a week to gain further insight into their careers, their families, their hobbies, and more. Think you work 70 hours a week? Probably not. Think you don’t have time to read? Take another look. She offers a fascinating perspective in these books, but if you can’t commit yet, sample the podcast, which touches on similar topics.

Some of the episodes so far have been on making time to read, being kind to your future self, the importance of tracking time, why there are no really typical days, and more. If you want to be successful and you want to be on top of your game, you need to listen to this podcast. It won’t take up anymore of your time than you’re already committing to your morning routine, and think of the rewards!

I really enjoyed her podcast on March 21st and being kind to your future self. I have a major commitment issue. As in, I can’t say no. I just tell myself I’ll figure it out eventually, and while I usually do, why can’t I just stop saying yes to everything? Vanderkam advises that before we commit to something in say June we ask ourselves, “would I be willing to do this tomorrow?” If the answer is no, then you probably wouldn’t be willing to do it in June either. We don’t become new people, and we’ll always be busy. If you say yes though, be happy to make that commitment! But be more careful about these decisions. I’m going to try and implement this ASAP!

You can download Before Breakfast wherever you get your podcasts, but in the meantime, you can check out Laura Vanderkam’s Ted Talk on gaining control of your free time to gain some insight on what she has to offer.
