The 2018 midterms may have been one of the craziest midterms I have ever witnessed. From how crazy campaigns were, the ever present campaign ads, and how divisive people have become. I’m in a lot of groups on social media and I follow a lot of different types of people so one thing I have really noticed is the polarization of people, specifically women. You’re either a feminist or you’re not. How people decided whether or not you’re a feminist is apparently by how you vote, not what you believe. I have something to say about it. I am not less of a feminist because I am Republican.

Women should be treated equally to men. Women should be paid equal to men for equal work. Women’s opinions should be just as valued as men’s. Women who report any form of misconduct against them, be it assault or harassment, are automatically assumed to be lying by many. It is something I am working to change. Women’s rights mean a lot to me and yes, I vote Republican.

I vote Republican. That doesn’t mean I’m not a good feminist. No, I do not think my political party is perfect. As Republicans, we have got to get better about how we talk about women and sexual misconduct and while we are pro-life, we must get better about our compassion towards women who have had abortions.

As a feminist Republican, I can be a leader within my community. I can be an example and show people that it’s more than okay to stand up for what you believe in – even when it’s not popular to say. Many people on my side of the aisle say that I’m too liberal in my advocacy for women, but many people on the other side of the aisle say I’m not a real feminist.

It’s sad that instead of seeing what we all have in common, people just point out how we differ. There is so much hate and instead of being like “wow, you could make a difference within your own party,” I have to hear “How dare you! You’re not a real feminist! You vote against women! You HATE women!” Stop pitting us against each other. Just because we’re women, we don’t have to agree on everything, but we must treat each other with respect and stop playing dirty.

I am a Feminist. I am a Republican. And I will make a difference.
