After graduation, he was deployed for eight years in Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Ranger-Qualified Aviation Officer, serving as an Apache Fighter Pilot and successfully leading two Apache Plantoons. During James’ time overseas, the GOP candidate earned a variety of awards and recognition for his dedication and bravery, such as the Combat Action Badge (CAB) and two Air Medals. Upon being honorably discharged and returning home to Detroit, James joined the family business, James Group International, where he currently serves as the President of the company. Since 2012, he has helped increase company revenue by over $100 million while simultaneously creating 100 jobs in the Detroit area. In addition to his Bachelor of Science from West Point, James also earned a Master of Supply Chain Management and Information Systems from Penn State University, as well as a Master of Business Administration from the prestigious Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. Regarding his his personal life, the Senate hopeful currently resides with his wife and two young boys, expecting a third this winter, in Farmington Hills, Michigan and is an active member in the Brightmoor Christian Church community.
John James is a conservative outsider running to bring fresh ideas to Washington. His decision to run for Senate occurred when he returned from his military service and noticed that areas of Detroit looked more desolate than the combat zones in Iraq. For James, it was not just a calling to serve his country. It was an obligation to utilize his gifts for the greater good of protecting the freedoms and blessings Americans enjoy everyday. It is a service he started in the Army, and wants to continue as a U.S. Senator. On the issues, the candidate’s platform is pro-life and pro-Second Amendment, as he is endorsed by the National Right to Life . When questioned about gun rights, stated, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, SHALL NOT be infringed. Enough said!” Also, as a combat veteran, James has a unique advantage to creating policy in regards to national security and protecting the borders, since he has hands-on experience in both areas from his duties in the military. If elected to the Senate, James vows to protect this nation and all American citizens from threats by way of stopping illegal immigration and defunding sanctuary cities, or as he calls them, “outlaw cities.” Another advantage James harbors is that as a veteran, he has a unique understanding of the issues facing the brave men and women who have so selflessly served this nation, “We must do a better job preparing our service members for life outside the military, because reintegration into civilian life should not be the toughest battle we (vets) face.” James hopes through his presence in the US Senate, he can help author and influence policy changes to better cater to the needs of veterans. Continuing onward, when it comes to economic issues, James once again has valuable insights due to being the President of James Group International, a Detroit-based business, granting him first-hand knowledge on how governmental policies impact American businesses. This will give the Senate a fresh pair of eyes in regards to how to to help, not harm, economic growth. The GOP nominee is fiercely dedicated to creating jobs not just for Michigan, but to stimulate the nation’s economy as a whole though policies that promote the fiscal prosperity of all Americans. Additionally, James understands that no business or nation can flourish properly while crippled by debt, so he will work tirelessly in the Senate to try to balance the federal budget. Lastly, and most unique to Michigan, he is committed to protecting the regions most valuable treasure, the Great Lakes, while still enhancing it’s economic utility.
The competition: Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI)
Incumbent Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), a career politician who has held office for nearly 43 years, is currently seeking her fourth term as one of Michigan’s Senators. On the issues, she is a staunch liberal, voting “No” on nearly all President Trump nominations as well as any Republican-authored policy, consistently creating stubborn gridlock in Congress. For example, Sen. Stabenow was adamantly opposed to the recent Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which actually ended up helping Michigan. In regards life issues, Sen. Stabenow is rated by Right to Life of Michigan as “100% pro-abortion” and has received endorsements from abortion giant Planned Parenthood, as well as NARAL Pro-Choice America. She is notorious for her extremist pro-abortion views and votes, even voting “No” on banning the horrific procedure of partial birth abortions. Sen. Stabenow has also been a champion of government-regulated healthcare with her unwavering support of the Affordable Care Act, believing that “Healthcare coverage needs to be a right, not a privilege”. When it comes to protecting the Constitutional rights of the American people, Sen. Stabenow’s track record once again comes up short. The third term Senator most recently received a 0% rating from Gun Owners of America, a civil rights organization that fights for the freedom to bear arms, a right inherently granted to Americans by the Constitution. Lastly, Sen. Stabenow is currently a ranking member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, an extremely important committee for the state of Michigan since farming is one of the largest sectors of the Michigan economy. Although her committee placement and name recognition make it tough for her to be unseated, President Trump did win the states 16 electors in the 2016 presidential election, making this election fertile ground for an upset to once again flip Michigan red.
