Unless you’ve been living under a rock or avoiding news cycles, social media, or podcasts, then you’ve probably heard about the new abortion law that the New York legislature passed and was immediately signed by Governor Cuomo.
I’m going to break down what this “women’s rights” bill really means and why it’s not pro-woman at all.
It legalized third term abortions
That’s right, babies viable outside of the womb can have their lives terminated in New York. I’m not sure how a baby born early is considered human life, but at that same stage in development, the baby in utero is considered inhuman. Saying a baby is “unwanted” says a lot about the mother or people surrounding the mother, but nothing at all about the baby.
Let me tell you what a baby is like at 23 weeks:
-
Blood vessels are forming all over its body to assist with breathing
-
The face is fully formed
-
They are familiar with noises outside the womb
-
The baby’s movement begins to increase
-
Their skin is red because of the developing veins and arteries right beneath their skin.
But please, New York, tell me more about how that isn’t a human.
It removes protection for babies born after a botched abortion
Yes, this means what you think it does. Doctors can stand by as a baby gasps for breath simply because someone deemed that child as “unwanted.”
This gives me every kind of jitter that Kermit Gosnell gave me. So not only does New York not value life inside the womb, they don’t value life even after it’s left the womb either.
Non-physicians can perform non-surgical abortions
Safe, legal, and rare. Right? So wrong. I don’t even know how pro-abortion activists can defend this. Abortion clinics already aren’t held to the same health code standards as hospitals or even doctor’s offices. Now, someone who hasn’t had the same training as a physician can perform abortions? This isn’t a pro-woman stance. In fact, I don’t think that should be a hill liberals want to die on.
It moves abortion law from penal code to health code
This is a problem because you not only have to worry about a pregnant woman being assaulted and losing her baby from that assault. Now, in addition, the state faces not having a statute to fall back on. Again, this is the very opposite of pro-woman.
The president of Live Action, Lila Rose, issued a statement on the new law including the following:
“Convicted criminals aren’t subjected to the death penalty in New York state, but now children up until the ninth month of pregnancy can be given lethal injections and poisoned to death. This is no different than infanticide…. New York’s law is barbaric and inhumane and rejects modern science and medical advancements that reveal the development and humanity of life in the womb…. A recent Marist poll showed 75 percent of Americans believe abortion should be limited to – at most – the first three months of pregnancy.”
