If you’re anything like me, you love traditions. Whether you’ve followed a family tradition through generations or you want to create your own, here are eleven Christmas traditions to cherish for years to come.

Matching pajamas on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning

This tradition is a great way to get the whole family feeling festive. The pajamas can be cute, crazy, silly, or timeless.

Viewing Christmas lights

This is one of my favorite traditions! It can be done in the days leading up to Christmas or even Christmas Eve! Dress up in pajamas, put hot chocolate in a travel mug, listen to Christmas music, and drive around to view the lights around your neighborhood or surrounding areas.

Christmas Eve church service

If you are a Christian, this is a wonderful tradition that I’m sure you already cherish. If not, it is never too late to start. I have gone since I was a baby. Each year is as moving as I have always remembered. It is a wonderful reminder of the purpose of the holiday.

Acts of service

Volunteer at a soup kitchen, donate toys, or donate your time to services that give Christmas gifts to the less fortunate, or donate money to your favorite charities. Giving gifts to better the community around you is one of the greatest traditions to begin.

Christmas movie night

Break out all the Christmas treats and settle in for a family movie night with your favorite Christmas movies. Family is one of the most important aspects of our lives. It is an easy way to bond without hassle.

Making Christmas cookies or gingerbread houses

Allow kids to make a mess and eat all the sugar. Let the imagination roam and enjoy your child’s happiness and expressive nature. This is even fun for adults who can give the cookies to neighbors or family as small gifts.

New ornament every year

If you’re like me, you have an eclectic collection of ornaments that all have a special meaning. Start picking out a special ornament for the year. It serves as a reminder of what the year brought and is fun to look back on for years to come!

Handmade ornaments, decorations, or cards

For those who have children, this is a great tradition to start. Allow them to get creative with some colored paper and glue sticks. Create fun Christmas crafts to make ornaments, paper decoration, or homemade cards.

Christmas morning family photos

Christmas morning is magical! Make sure to capture it. My mom would have us stand at the top of the stairs where we couldn’t see presents. We would be giggling in anticipation and then she would take a picture to capture that youthful energy. She would also make us hold hands as we walked down.

Make luminaries

These are meant to represent the stars that lit the way for the Three Wise Men as they traveled to see Jesus. It’s a great way to share the Christmas story while keeping things festive and fun! Get the whole family involved by decorating the bags.

Hot chocolate bar

Channel your inner child and create your own hot chocolate with whipped cream, sprinkles, and other toppings. Yum! For a super festive tradition the whole family will look forward to, do this in addition to Christmas movie night.

Merry Christmas, y’all!
