I’m a straight-edge conservative girl. In college, I was given the position of pro-legalization of marijuana for a persuasive paper. I was a “tough on crime” Republican. There was no way I was going to actually believe what I was writing, until I found myself learning more, agreeing, and writing with passion. I titled the paper “The Blunt Truth” and I ended up getting an “A.” A part of me still wasn’t convinced, but I was a criminal justice major and the more I learned, the more I realized that the war on drugs isn’t helping anyone, anywhere. And I come at this from a fiscally conservative place.

For starters, the amount of money and resources wasted on non-violent first time drug offenders and non-violent drug offenders is insane. We spend over $47 billion a year for this War on Drugs. 85.4% of drug arrests were for possession only. Specifically, the number of arrests with marijuana involved were 90.8% possession charges. Do you know much that is clogging the system? Do you realize how many court cases there are for simple possession?  With the money used for court costs, jail costs, and wasted police efforts, we could take that money, funnel it back into the system to work on programs within prison for mental illness and trade training.

The money to be made from the marijuana industry is massive. States who have passed recreational use have seen a boost in their economy. Even states who have just passed medical marijuana measures are also reaping the benefits from dispensaries.

The medical benefits of marijuana are enormous. The least controversial of these benefits comes from CBD oil. CBD oil is the extract from hemp has little to no intoxicating effects which means you don’t get a high from using it. CBD oil can help relieve anxiety, insomnia, spasms, and epilepsy. Medical marijuana, which is the prescription from a doctor to use marijuana and all the components within it, are used to relieve chronic pain, eases the pain of multiple sclerosis and nerve pain in general, nausea, weight loss, PTSD, and other.

The benefits of marijuana outweigh any negative.

Marijuana may sound scary but do your research.
